Early fetal development of the medial canthal ligament and Horner’s muscle: a histological study

چکیده
We examined horizontal and frontal sections of 15 specimens (20-30 weeks of gestation) from the large collection of human fetuses stored at the Complutense University in Madrid (Spain). Frontal sections demonstrated the orbicularis oculi muscle inserting to a raphe-like structure along the horizontal parts of the lacrimal canaliculi. In horizontal sections, the raphe-like structure corresponded to a fibrous tissue mass sandwiched by the superior and inferior lacrimal canaliculi. The tendons of Horner’s muscle were divided into 1) the so-called “reflection tendon” that included the typical myotendineous junction at the insertion into the maxilla, and 2) the so-called “direct tendon” in the roof of the lacrimal sac. However, Horner’s muscle did not insert into the canaliculi, but was simply attached to, or embedded in, the fibrous sheath around them. Notably, none of these connective tissue structures was attached to the tarsi. Horner’s muscle and its tendon might contribute to formation of the bony attachment of the future MCL, but the main part of the MCL most likely originates from the raphe-like structure. The connection between the MCL and the tarsi seems to be established after birth due to the growth of connective tissue along the lacrimal canaliculi. Although congenital entropion is a rare condition among Westerners, the present study demonstrated that the tarsus is unlikely to be fixed at a late stage in Western fetuses.

Medial collateral ligament (MCL)injury, is one of the most common ligament injuries of the knee, mostly results from a valgus force.Restoration of function and going back to the pre-injury level of function is the aim of treatment in ligament injuries of the knee. There are multiple soft tissue structures in medial side that play an important role in connection with each other to retain medial s...

INTRODUCTION The medial and lateral canthal ligaments represent fibrous condensations of tissue anchoring the tarsal plates to the medial and lateral orbital rims. The medial canthal ligament extends anteriorly to the anterior lacrimal crest, posteriorly to the posterior lacrimal crest, and superiorly along the frontal process of the maxilla and the frontal bone. The medial canthal ligament’s m...

BACKGROUND Rupture of the medial canthal ligament can be caused by many events. It remains a challenge to rebuild the drainage system and restore the function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of medial canthoplasty combined with conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy (CDCR) in patients with medial telecanthal deformities and lacrimal drainage system damage. METHODS Twent...

The lateral canthus is an important aesthetic facial landmark. It is formed by fusion of the upper and lower tarsal plates and is supported by muscular and fibrous lateral orbital attachments (▶ Fig. 23.1). The posterior limb of the canthal tendon (lateral palpebral ligament) anchors the tarsi to the internal zygoma at the lateral orbital tubercle (Whitnall’s tubercle) (▶ Fig. 23.2). The compar...
متن کاملThe orbicularis retaining ligament of the medial orbit: closing the circle.
BACKGROUND There exists some ambiguity regarding the exact anatomical limits of the orbicularis retaining ligament, particularly its medial boundary in both the superior and inferior orbits. Precise understanding of this anatomy is necessary during periorbital rejuvenation. METHODS Sixteen fresh hemifacial cadaver dissections were performed in the anatomy laboratory to evaluate the anatomy of...
